Servanthood is your unfinished business
Individuals and organizations have unfinished business

Servanthood begins with finding God in your circumstances. It makes it possible to serve others in their circumstances. Servants don't dwell on ideas - they identify the priorities and execute.

A historic term and legal concept, servants cared for their masters' property and claimed no rights. Who's your master? People with secular world views point to their favorite ideologies: science, the state, or some vague idea of a common good. People of faith say it's God, and our ideals provide words for describing God.  Either way, the quality of our servanthood points others to the master we truly serve, not the one we claim to serve. Here are the imperatives of servanthood.
  • The fact of servanthood: We don't become servants - we are servants
  • The truth of servanthood: No matter who we are or what we believe, we're compelled to serve a master
  • The scope of servanthood: We serve a master in all dimensions of our lives
  • The purpose of servanthood: What we say and do points others to the master we serve
  • The paradox of servanthood: The master we claim to serve isn't always the master we actually serve
  • The challenge of servanthood: We're free to choose the master we serve, but we don't always choose wisely
  • The dilemma of servanthood: The master we want isn't the master we need
  • The way of servanthood: We're entrusted with resources to meet the needs of others in their circumstances and point them to our master
  • The unfinished business of servanthood: Every day brings new opportunities to better serve our master
as individuals and as leaders of organizations

In other words, servanthood is the only way to integrate faith and ideals into daily living. The principles of servanthood help us discover our unfinished business. Building capacity is the only way to get there.
